Production Stills For Documentary Film: Dalya's Other Country (Now Streaming!)
In May of last year (2016), I was asked to photograph some production stills for a documentary film called Dalya’s Other Country, directed/produced by Julia Meltzer, and co-produced by Mustafa Rony Zeno. One of my photographs ended up as the poster for the film, and that film is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime!
The film follows 4 years of life changes for Dalya & her mom Rudayna as they arrive in Los Angeles from Aleppo, Syria.
Dalya, a Syrian refugee living in America, tries to be a normal teenager. Yet under the shadow of Donald Trump’s rise to power, she must contend with daily reminders of her otherness, like being the only girl in school that wears a hijab. This touching film explores a young life caught between highly politicised identities. — Amazon Prime
In 2012 Dalya and her mother Rudayna fled Aleppo for Los Angeles as war took over. Months before, Rudayna learns a secret that destroys her marriage, leaving her single at midlife. Arriving in LA, Dalya enrolls as the only Muslim at Holy Family Catholic High School. Can mother and daughter remake themselves while holding on to their Islamic traditions? — Dalya’s Other Country Website
A few more stills that I shot during the filming of Dalya’s Other Country, which also happened to be on the day of her High School Graduation from her Catholic high school.
